Dr. Lucien Ellington of UTC's Teacher Preparation Academy recently received $147,000 from The Freeman Foundation. Dr. Ellington will use the funds to continue support for the National Consortium for Teaching Asia, Southeast Satellite Center. Under the direction of Dr. Ellington, the Southeast Satellite Center offers pedagogical workshops for Asian studies educators.

In Dr. Ellington’s role as Director, he teaches a thirty-hour institute for secondary school educators on the histories and cultures of China, Japan, and Korea. Teachers from Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi attend the program to acquire information and teaching strategies that can be incorporated into their classrooms.

Congratulations to Dr. Ellington on his continued recognition for efforts to spread cultural education in this region. The Center provides important opportunities for regional teachers to gain broader perspectives about Asia.
