ONLINE CATALOG OFFERS NEW SEARCH LIMITS VIA WEB INTERFACE

Now UTC students, faculty, and staff can limit library catalog searches by language, by format,
and/or by publication date. Limits may be set when using any the library catalog's web search
forms, i.e. the basic search form, the advanced search form, or the expert search form.

The UTC Library's online catalog helps users locate any of the over 1.6 million items owned by the
Library, including books, periodicals, microforms, films, and other audiovisual materials.

UTC students, faculty, and staff are able to use a graphical, web interface and search the UTC
Library's catalog for:

any items owned by the UTC Library--by author, by title, by call number, by subject, by keyword, by
ISSN (International Standard Serial Number), by ISBN (International Standard Book Number), by LCCN
(Library of Congress Card Number),

journals--by title or by college or school
class reserves-- by an instructor's name or by a course number
their library activity record--by their UTC i.d number
their library address record--by their UTC i.d number
their library fine record--by their UTC i.d number

NEW SEARCH FORM

Some of the UTC Library's electronic indexes may now be searched using a new, JAVA-based search
form. This new, JAVA-based search form offers users an easy-to-use interface which incorporates
frames, a constant navigation bar, and online help on every search page.

Moreover, using the new form researchers can now quickly search the UTC Library's catalog for the
journal or book title in which an indexed article appears simply by clicking their mouse on a BLUE
and GOLD icon located at the bottom of each index citation. Clicking this icon automatically
searches the UTC Library's web-based catalog using a journal title's International Standard Serial
Number (ISSN)or a book title's International Standard Book Number (ISBN).

If the journal or book title is not found searching by the ISSN or the ISBN, researchers can (and
probably should) quickly perform a title or author search of the UTC Library's catalog in the same
screen window in order to verify that the title is not owned at UTC. Older titles do not have ISSNs
and some titles are bound with other titles without their unique ISBN.

The indexes using this new form include: Atlantes, Books in Print, the Bowker Directory of
Publishers, the Catalogue du Musee Olympique, CINAHL, ERIC, Heracles, MedLINE, the Modern Language
Association Bibliography, PsycLIT, SOCIOfile, Sports
Discus, and the Ulrichs International Periodicals Directory.

Use of the new form is optional. The old search form is still available and may be used just as it
was before.

The new search form requires a JAVA-enabled web browser and at least a Pentium 133mhz PC or G3
233mhz MAC.

a list of all of the library's electronic indexes can be found at: http://www.lib.utc.edu/arc.html

Indexes listed on that page with a (JAVA) link can be searched using the new form. Just click on the
word (JAVA).

This form is still under development. Questions, comments, or suggestions re: the form are always
welcomed and should be emailed to: [log in to unmask]

Online help is available on each of the library catalog's search forms.

PLEASE NOTE: The web interface to the library's online catalog uses "cookies" to maintain a recent
search history at the bottom of each catalog page. This search history is simply a series of links
to previous search pages. To return to a previous search page, just click your mouse on one of
these links. Users should enable cookies in their web browsers in order to take advantage of this
feature.

The web interface to the library's online catalog is still under development. Questions, comments,
or suggestions re: the web interface are always welcomed and should be emailed to:

CHATTANOOGA CONFERENCE ON SOUTHERN LITERATURE

The literary festival rated by Southern writers themselves as the best in the country marks its 10th
anniversary this spring with a keynote address by Academy Award-winning screenwriter and Pulitzer
Prize-winning playwright, Horton Foote.

Also planned for the April 15-17, 1999, Chattanooga Conference on Southern Literature are a luncheon
presentation by North Carolina Poet Laureate Fred Chappell and discussions of literary topics by
Doris Betts, Kaye Gibbons, Lee Smith, Shelby Foote, Clyde Edgerton, and other members of the
Fellowship of Southern Writers.

Speakers include acclaimed novelists, Janice Daugharty and Randall Kenan, and prize-winning poet,
Kelly Cherry.

Tennessee State Historian, Wilma Dykeman, will deliver the Livingood Lecture, sponsored by the
Chattanooga Regional History Museum and honoring local historian, Dr. James Livingood.

The conference offers booklovers the opportunity to hear authors lecture, read their works, and take
part in panel discussions. Conference-goers have the chance to meet their literary idols, talk with
them, and take home a cherished signature.

The anniversary conference will include musical presentations by the Chattanooga Choral Society for
the Preservation of African-American Songs, under the direction of UTC Music Professor, Roland
Carter. Rebecca Whelchel's Chattanooga Sings! will also entertain participants.

A special occasion for the anniversary conference will be the celebration of the 90th birthday of
Eudora Welty. Miss Welty was one of the speakers at the first Chattanooga Conference on Southern
Literature in 1981. She turns 90 on April 14, 1999. While Miss Welty will not attend the
conference, a tribute to her is planned with remarks by other members of the Fellowship of Southern
Writers which she helped found.

A conference highlight is the presentation of Fellowship prizes to outstanding Southern writers.
The 1999 winners include Shelby Foote, John Hope Franklin, Charles Frazier, Barry Hannah, Bobbie Ann
Mason, and Michael Knight.

Other fellows who are scheduled to attend include: Richard Bausch, Wendell Berry, George Core, Ellen
Douglas, Ernest Gaines, George Garrett, William Hoffman, Madison Jones, Eric Lincoln, Romulus
Linney, Louis D.Aubin Jr., Mary Lee Settle, Dave Smith, Elizabeth Spencer, Walter Sullivan, C. Vann

The conference is presented by the Chattanooga Arts and Education Council and UTC. To register for
