With the support of a UC Foundation grant, the Theatre and Speech
department is developing a theatre piece for children tentatively
titled "Tales from the Tennessee Valley." It will be composed of
stories from Appalachian, Cherokee, and African-American traditions
done in a "story theatre" format. Yet to be scheduled performances
will begin after the July 4th holiday.

We will schedule free-admission performances at the Ward Theatre in
Fine Arts Center for which announcements will be made on UTCINFO and
other media. However, a principal thrust of our mission is to
perform beyond the campus. Discussions are underway for
performances at City Park and Recreation sites (though we seem to be
caught in the middle of a "changing of the guard" at City Hall, so
this process is temporarily stalled.)

We are interested in identifying groups of children for whom we might
perform. Our target audience is 5-13 years old, but anticipate that
older audiences would find something of interest as well. Since
several of our actors have had to take day-jobs to support themselves
as funding came into place, day-time performances may be limited.
Evening performances are available through most of July. We are
prepared to travel to off-campus sites in the vicinity and play
either indoors or outside. We are set up to perform for audiences of
approximately 100 at a time. There would be no charge for
performances.

If you represent a children's group (on campus or off) for whom you
might like us to perform, please contact me via return e-mail.

Thank you for your interest.
