"The Fine Arts and the Quality of Life" is the topic of this year's
Perspectives Series.  Larry Brown, the author of several highly acclaimed
novels and short stories, will deliver the keynote address Tuesday, Jan. 19
at 7:30 p.m. in the Tennessee Room. His first novel, Dirty Work, gained
recognition for its antiwar sentiments, candid treatment of sensitive
issues, and exploration of spirituality and religion.  His short fiction
works include Facing the Music, and Big Bad Love.  Other novels include
Joe, and Father and Son. Brown spoke at the 1989 Biennial Conference on
Southern Literature, and has been a guest on NBC's "Today Show."

Joan Myers Brown,  executive/artistic director and founder of the
internationally acclaimed Philadelphia Dance Company (Philadanco). Brown is
also the founder of the International Association of Blacks in Dance, the
International Conference of Black Dance Companies, and is a distinguished
visiting professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

Perspectives is an annual event established in 1994 to enrich the
intellectual climate on campus through lectures and exchanges of ideas.  It
is funded by the Witt-Bagley Endowment Fund.  Previous series topics have
covered issues concerning health, politics, law, education and religion.
All lectures/workshops listed above are free and open to the public.

Coinciding with the Perspectives Series are the following arts events:

Friday, Jan. 15
An evening of poetry and music featuring Mark Strand, poet; Brad Harbuck,
composer; Stephen King, baritone; and Jennifer Green, pianist. Sponsored
English and music departments.
7:30 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall

Tursday, Jan. 21
Patten Fine Arts Series presents a performance by Philadanco, one of
America's foremost dance ensembles.
8:15 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall.  Tickets for this event may be
purchased by calling the Fine Arts Center box office at 755-4269.
