Dear Colleague,
There has been some confusion regarding the procedures surrounding
transfer of credit for students who are engaged in an articulated
program of study. I hope that the following will clarify matters.
1) Students begin this program at a 2-year Tennessee institution
such as Chattanooga State or Cleveland State. The faculty and advisors
at those schools should be working with the students to help them select
the proper sequence of courses that will allow the students to transfer
to UTC having completed the General Education requirements and the
initial course work for a major. Staff in our Retention and Advisement
Office make regular visits to the Chattanooga and Cleveland schools to
work with students and staff.
2) When a student transfers to UTC, all of his or her academic
record is transported to the UTC transcript. In other words, all college
work, regardless of the earned grade, is reflected on the student's UTC
transcript and is used to determine the student's standing and GPA.
However, only grades of C or better may be counted as completing the
requirements of the articulation agreement. As a hypothetical example,
imagine a student who comes to UTC having received a D and an F in two
courses that would have satisfied the Western Civilizations requirement.
We would report on the transcript that the student enrolled in those
courses and earned those grades. We would not allow those courses to
satisfy the articulation agreement, and the student would have to
complete that GE requirement at UTC.
3) As there is no mechanism that automatically flags a transfer
student as participating in the articulation program, we ask that these
students come to the Records Office and make the staff aware of their
want to be recognized as a participant in the articulation program. The
staff of the Records Office will audit the student's transcripts and set
into motion the remainder of the degree classification process. We hope
that with a new Student Information System we will allow us to better
identify these students and expedite a review of their records.
If you have additional questions, please call Linda Orth (4669) or me.

Regards,
