First Open GIS Instructional

This is the first in a series of instructional presentations I will be
conducting over the next several weeks. Each week I will focus on a
specific GIS problem from one faculty member or student. We will explore
both the solution to the problem and anything related.

The for the first session, I will give a brief overview of ESRI ArcMap 
Software. Describe how to get the software and where to find data on 
campus. Then we will explore some issues Dr. Craig Laing, Geography, 
needs resolved.

Specifically, Dr. Laing is presenting a poster at the American
Association of Geographers' National Convention in Chicago. The poster
covers his research on drug production in rural Appalachia.

Dr. Laing's GIS problem is that he is using several maps copied from
various publications in his poster. He wants to reproduce each map in a
consistent style. One particular map is a Choropleth diagram with
multiple variables shown as different maps.

We will explore how to find data to and best recreate the maps in 
ArcGIS. I will give a brief discussion of what a Choropleth map is and 
some of the issues surrounding this common cartographic technique. 
Finally, we will look at how to create a single printed diagram in 
ArcGIS that shows several versions of the same map.

I will provide some handouts but you will want to bring a pen or pencil
to take notes. At the end of the session we will discuss what problem
to tackle next.
