Dr. Hunter Huckabay, of the College of Education and Applied Professional
Studies, has been awarded $353,205 to fund the second year of a five-year
U.S. Department of Education GEAR UP II Program. UTC --in conjunction with
the
Hamilton County Department of Education and eight other community partners--
is implementing GEAR UP II services in Dalewood and East Lake Fine
Art Academy, two inner-city middle schools.

The GEAR UP II program will provide educational and social services to
children at the targeted schools including tutoring, counseling, mentoring,
pre-Algebra summer classes, an in-residence summer academic camp, and
various community programs targeted to increase student study skills,
awareness of
career opportunities, and healthy lifestyles. In addition, the GEAR UP II
program will provide long term course selection assistance, financial aid
and college admission information to students and their parents, and
professional development enhancements for workshop teachers.

This program is an important component in UTC's metropolitan outreach and
service.

Congratulations to Mr. Huckabay on receiving the funding to implement this
project, and best wishes for its success.
