tough game. Alex Anderson had a career-high night last year with 24

The Lady Mocs are gunning for a ninth-consecutive Southern Conference
championship. Make your plans today to come watch a fantastic basketball
team and let's fill the roundhouse this season!!

Below are quotes after the game vs. Tennessee from Wes Moore, the
Chattanooga players, Pat Summitt, and the Tennessee players

TENNESSEE HEAD COACH PAT SUMMITT:

(Opening remarks)

"I thought it was a good test. Specifically, because Chattanooga is a
team that spreads so much, with their three-point shooters and their
inside play. One thing that cost us was our lack of commitment to
defense one on one. They were 8 of 22 on threes, and that adds up
quickly.

"At the half, we talked about defending one on one and denying the
middle. We got quality looks in the first half. Wes (Moore) does a great
job, and they will win a lot of games. This was a good test. Shannon
Bobbitt couldn't make a shot, but she played through adversity. In the
second half, she got everyone else involved, and that is what you want
your point guard to do."

(on whether or not a team turns it up playing a defending national
champion) "Absolutely. Winning a national championship provides even
more motivation for the other team. We face that every game, because we
are Tennessee, and because they want the chance to beat the defending
national champions. They want to prove their worth."

(on Tennessee's shooting woes in the first half) "We were not as sharp
offensively. We were not making shots, even though we got a lot of open
looks. At halftime, we talked about having defense and board play and
how that can influence the outcome of a game. We were able to generate
some easy points because of that. Even though we couldn't get the ball
to fall, we were able to get more putbacks."

(on the Tennessee intimidation factor) "It's getting harder. The
intimidation factor is not as much as it was in the early years of my
coaching career. The teams coming in know that they have to have
composure, and the coaching is getting better. It's not going to be easy
for us, because we don't schedule easy games. Chattanooga spread us out
as much as anyone will this season, except for maybe Stanford. They
shoot the three and score in the paint. We did a better job in the
second half."

(on the offensive improvement in the second half) "There were a couple
of times that we were running out offensive sets, but we weren't making
shots. Our players were determined to make shots. We reversed the ball,
and we'd go inside. We didn't get in the flow much in the first half."

(on Chattanooga's Laura Hall) "Laura Hall does a great job. She knows
how to handle the ball, defend, play with a lot of energy and lead her
team. I have a lot of respect for her game, and so does Shannon Bobbitt.
She's very tough and made a difference. She's a solid all-around
player."

TENNESSEE SENIOR ALEXIS HORNBUCKLE

(on Chattanooga) "They played hard for 40 minutes. Their point guard did
a great job pushing tempo. They were crashing the boards. They are a
coach's dream."

(on improved offensive performance in the second half) "I don't think we
were getting better shots. Our defensive stops gave us a different kind
of energy. Our adrenaline showed."

TENNESSEE JUNIOR CANDACE PARKER

(on shots not falling in the first half) "It was tough. Sometimes,
you're going to have a lid on the bucket. In the first half, there were
shots that I'm used to making that were not falling. My coaches and
teammates told me to keep doing what I was doing."

(on Chattanooga) "If I remember correctly, they came out the same last
year. We ground it out against them, and hopefully, that will help them
later on."

CHATTANOGA HEAD COACH WES MOORE:

(Opening remarks)

"In the first half, I felt like we were hanging around and that's what
you hope for when you come over here. You hope that you can keep it
close for a while. I thought that defensively in the first half, we did
what we wanted to try to do. Against Tennessee you hope that they have
to settle for some jump shots and that they are not hitting them on that
particular day. I thought our kids did a great job playing team defense
and did a pretty good job on the boards. That's a pretty big part of
their offense as well. I was very proud of the effort there, and I just
wish that we could have maintained it. Obviously, we let the run off
their press hurt us in the second half. We knew that that was something
we'd have to avoid, and we didn't quite get it done.

"I think familiarity helped us today. These seniors have been here a
couple of times and we were a little more prepared. We feel like we've
been competitive with most people in the country, but we really haven't
been competitive with Tennessee. That was our goal, to come over here
and try to hang around and keep it close and have a chance at the end.
Except for a few runs, I thought we did that. There were some good
signs.

"Maybe [Tennessee's] not hitting on all cylinders yet. I'm sure they're
going to get better as the year goes on and I hope we do to. I know this
wasn't one of their better days, but you're talking about defending
national champions, the consensus No. 1 in the country, they have pretty
much everyone else intact and added some talented freshmen. They still
have to do it on the court, but they have an opportunity to repeat and
if they do that then they'd have to be considered one of the best teams
ever. They have unlimited potential."

Senior Laura Hall:

"With their defense and their press, they get after people. Coach Moore
told us a few days ago that's what they do. They get a layup, get in the
press, get a steal and get a three and that's what happened today.

"We knew we could get to the hole if we wanted to, just because they had
so much pressure on us outside. We knew that we needed to do more of
that and attack. If we had an open shot, take it and if someone's
pressuring you, kick it to the open man."

Sophomore Shanara Hollinquest:

"It's pretty hard because you don't want to get your shot blocked but
you still have to try to go hard. I tried not to think about that and
just played my game."

Senior Alex Anderson:

"I think I just wasn't attacking enough. I settled for the jump shot
more instead of attacking."
