Dear UTC faculty,

Your friendly neighborhood activists are sponsoring a very interesting
event in Chattanooga on Wednesday, October 24th. it is a touring program
about US business and government involvement in Columbia. Details are
below. The folks on the tour are very interested in speaking to college
classrooms about the situation in Columbia. (and, in the case of the David
- the folksinger - about politics in general, political music or just
music) If any of y'all are interested in having one, two or all three of
these folks come and speak to your class between 1 and 6 pm on Wed, October
24th (or possibly in the morning on Thursday), please get in touch with me
ASAP. They will be on TalkRadio at 11 am, need to eat lunch and then will
be available. Their program will start with a community potluck dinner at
6:30 at the UTC Catholic Student Center at 510 Palmetto St. the evening of
the 24th. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Also, my name is john johnson and i am a local environmentalist. i am
available year round to come and speak to classrooms on various subjects
relating to environmental issues (tho i will tackle political issues like
war as well).

Please contact me at 949-5922 or email [log in to unmask] if you are
interested. thanks.

Witness for Peace Southeast
presents...

U.S. Out of Colombia
A Roadshow

Featuring:

William Mendoza -- President of the Colombian beverage workers' union,
which is suing Coca-Cola in U.S. Federal Court for complicity in the murder
and displacement of union workers. He will tell the story of his friend
Gil, who was murdered by paramilitary soldiers on the floor of the
Coca-Cola bottling plant. William and his family live under the constant
threat of death while he continues to organize for the rights of workers in
Colombia.

David Rovics -- A folksinger of the rabble-rousing variety, David has
become a fixture in the North American protest scene, sharing the stage
with the likes of Pete Seeger and Ralph Nader. David will be joined by
Allie Rosenblatt on harmony vocals.

Melissa Fridlin -- Drawing on her experiences on two Witness for Peace
delegations to Colombia, Melissa will offer a slideshow with pictures from
recent delegations. Her talk will focus on fumigation in Colombia, where
the US government is pouring millions of dollars in aid into aerial
spraying of thousands of acres of Colombian jungles with Roundup-ultra.

Violence increases every day in Colombia, where a 50-year civil war claims
over 30,000 people each year. The US government is only adding fuel to the
fire of this conflict in the country with the worst human rights record in
the Western hemisphere. US aid to Colombia already has topped $2 billion,
and the Bush administration has requested another $700 million for 2003.
The bulk of this aid goes to the Colombian military and ineffective and
deadly fumigation of coca crops.

Come educate yourself on where your tax dollars are going!!
