Just a couple of bits more clarification, for those interested...

First, the OnLine (Web PH) Phone Directory is separate from the
printed phone directory. The online directory is maintained by
you, with assistance from Brenda Cummings and the Enterprise Systems
Team in the Information Technology Division. The printed directory
comes from University Relations based on the forms your fill out.
We're making plans to integrate these two directories, sometime,
probably next year, but right now they are completely separate.

Second, your GEM (Generic E-mail Address, e.g. Richard-Gambrell2utc.edu)
works just as well as your "Real" e-mail address, but we urge you
to give out your GEM, not your "real", as your e-mail address. Let
me explain.

Your "real e-mail" is your actual cecasun delivery account. You
have a user account on cecasun and that is where your e-mail messages
are currently delivered. You can log on with Eudora or WebMail or
whatever to retrieve your e-mail. Because these accounts (addresses)
depend upon the actual name of the server, these addresses will change
the next time we replace the cecasun server.

We recommend you give out your GEM and to use it as the From address
in e-mail messages. Think of the GEM as your public address. Not only
is your GEM friendly to understand and remember, it will remain the
same when we change e-mail servers. The Online Phone directory shows
the link between your GEM and your delivery ("real") account. This
is how the e-mail system knows where to deliver your GEM messages, so
you would not normally change it.

Students have a GEM, too, which uses the form [log in to unmask]
instead of [log in to unmask], and a "real" account on moccasun.utc.edu.

Occasionally, there are two or more persons with the same first and
last name, or the first name isn't the one you may know the person as,
so it is best to check the Online Directory if you are not sure.

We do expect to change e-mail servers during Spring 2003. We will
be announcing more about this as soon as we have detailed information
available. For the most part, we expect this change to go very smoothly
with little disruption to your use of e-mail. However, the change will
be easier on you if your correspondents are used to using your GEM, not
your cecasun ("real") e-mail address. (Think of this like advance
notice of the phone exchange change, you can go ahead and make the
change anytime, if you don't already give out your GEM.)

Thanks for your time.
Richard
