An addition to Dr. Adsit's suggestion that we upload pdf files instead of
Powerpoint: The student cannot edit those or re-use them as easily!

NOTE: UTC's phone prefixes are ALL being changed TO 425. Old and new should
work through 8/31, but 423-425-4542 is my "new" phone number.

Subject: [UTCSTAFF] Faculty Using Blackboard

To Faculty Using the Online Course Delivery System, Blackboard:

There are a couple of recurring "issues" with Blackboard....

There is a problem with sending e-mail from Blackboard and we are working
on troubleshooting this issue. If you try that function, you will get a
message saying that it worked but no one will ever get the e-mail message.
I will let you know when we have fixed the problem. In the meantime, if
you have access to the ASIS system, you can download a class roll for your
course by using COURSEDATA. If you save the file and name it with the
extension .xls, then you will be able to open the file in Excel and have
access to the students' e-mail addresses. You can then use your regular
e-mail software to send out e-mail messages to the students by copying the
e-mail addresses and pasting them in.

I am getting a number of calls from students about their user names and
passwords for Blackboard.... Student user names are their UTCID (three
letters and three numbers); their (default) passwords for Blackboard are
the last 4 digits of their social security number. If a student has
forgotten their UTCID (or if they never knew it), they need to contact the
Help Desk to get it. They must show their ID to get this information.

If a student changed his/her password in the system and can't remember it,
they will need to come to the Walker Teaching Resource Center with their ID
to have their password re-set. (Becasue the e-mail function in Blackboard
isn't working, then the "Forgot your password?" function on the log on
screen (http://utconline.utc.edu) is not working.)

Other tips on using Blackboard are available in the Blackboard for Students
handout at: http://www.utc.edu/Teaching-Resource-Center/BB4Students.pdf
(This also outlines how students can set their e-mail to come to the
correct address.)

There also seems to be something going on with PowerPoint files in courses
in the system. Powerpoint files are being downloaded to the individual
machine instead of opening up in Blackboard. Normally, MS Internet
Explorer will open a powerpoint file and show it on a page. Netscape
Navigator will not show Powerpoint files within a web page and will offer
to download it to your computer. This seems to be an intermittent problem
(meaning sometimes it happens and other times it does not), which may make
it more difficult to troubleshoot. We are looking into this issue and I
will let you know when we have found/fixed a solution.

In the meantime, if you can, try uploading pdf files instead of
PowerPoint--they are smaller files and generally easier for students to
access over modem lines. (If you set them up to be 3-up handouts, they
also take less paper if the student prints them.) To create pdf files, you
need to have a full verson of Acrobat on your machine. (Or you can come up
to the Walker Teaching Resource Center with your files and make them up
here.)

Please call me (x4026), Charles Hart (x4002), or Marcus Myers (x4188) if
you have other questions about the system.

Thanks for your patience, Karen
