Donna

Thanks for sharing your concerns which gives me the opportunity to update
the campus on the 425 number change. The purpose of the change was to
eliminate the confusion of UTC numbers starting with 755, 757, 785, and 321
and to allow the University to get additional numbers for the UTC Place
housing that would show a single prefix number for all UTC.

UTC Telecommunications has been proactive in trying to limit the impact of
the 425 number change. To summarized some of the actions: The permissive
dialing of the 425 numbers started in April of 2002 and went through
September 2002. Multiple Email and newspaper articles were used to notify
the campus and community of the changes. The 2002-2003 Campus directory
published in the fall of 2002 also has the 425 numbers. The student handbook
and directory were updated as well. In addition, Telecommunications
contacted cellular companies and major hospitals and government
organizations requesting them to add the 425 numbers to their internal
telephone systems to allow them to call UTC.

UTC Telecommunications has been in discussions numerous times with BellSouth
to limit the impact of the change. Some of the actions that BellSouth has
taken, as a result of the UTC requests, include the following:

1. BellSouth has changed all UTC numbers in their on-line data base to show
the 425 numbers for BellSouth directory assistance. This data base is
available to all telephone directory operators (non-BellSouth companies) but
some of these organizations do not up date their internal databases in a
timely manner.

2. The July 2002 Chattanooga BellSouth phone book has all UTC numbers listed
as 425. This is the directory with the picture of Fletcher Hall on the
cover.

3. Recordings are on most of the main advertised campus numbers stating
that the number has been changed and the new number is 425-XXXX. Examples
include: Main campus line, Admissions, Records, Disbursement, Student
Health, University Center, Library, Bookstore, Food Services, Arena,
Chancellor, Provost, University Relations, Vice Chancellor Business and
Operations, Business Services, Business and Financial Affairs and several
other numbers that are used by the public to contact the University. Because
the University has about 3000 phone numbers, BellSouth was not able to put a
recording on all numbers and could only use the recorder for main numbers.
Telecommunications has a meeting scheduled with BellSouth next week so if
anyone is having a problem with a specific number please send a direct email
to me.

With the 425 numbers in place for over nine months, I expect we are on the
down slope of the learning curve. I would like to encourage everyone to
continue to publicize the new 425 number in all correspondence, email
addresses, web sites, and printed material so that anyone needing to contact
the University will know that 425 is the number to call. The campus main
line is 423 425-4111.

Thank you again for your concerns and patience as all our external users
continue to learn that all UTC numbers now start with 425.

Subject: [UTCSTAFF] PHONE CHANGES FOR OPERATOR

Someone needs to be in touch with the phone companies about the changes of
our phone numbers. The operators do not have the 425 numbers for the campus
and are still telling customers that our number at UTC is still 755.

Also, when someone tries to call the old number, there is a recording that
says "this number has been disconnected or no longer in service" - it does
no good to call the operator about this because they do not seem to know our
new number.

Thanks
