10am Saturday, November 17, 2007 at the Humphreys House in Reflection
Riding

Walk the Attack of Lookout Mountain.

Join Jim Ogden, Historian for Chickamauga & Chattanooga National
Military
Park for a talk and walk on the significant portion of the Battle of
Lookout
Mountain that took place on or around Reflection Riding, including a
visit
to the sites of the Union Crossings of Lookout Creek and the first
part of
their sweep toward the northern tip of the "Gibraltar." This talk
will meet
at the Humphreys House in Reflection Riding and include a hayride
around the
property and a walk back toward the front of the Riding.

Also, be certain to bring a sack lunch and hiking shoes to join Jim
for an
optional hike up to Cravens House.

This event is free to the public.

Stargazing at 8 PM at Reflection Riding

November 17, 2007. Comet Holmes will be a featured. This month we
look to the outer edge of the Milky Way.
We have our nearest neighboring stars as we are part of what is
called the
Orion arm of our galaxy. These bright stars make the Winter Sky the most
beautiful over the hazy skies of summer. The Constellation Orion will
be on
the eastern horizon at sunset. On the 18th we have another of bright
meteor
showers, the Leonids. It is best to see these showers after midnight,
because that is when the night sky is running into the meteors as the
Earth
moves about the Sun. This session will begin at 8pm (1 hour earlier than
previous sessions due to the time change.)

All stargazing sessions will meet on the lower side of the upper pond in
Reflection Riding. Please enter through the Riding’s service road
(above
the CNC gate), following the signs to the Humphreys House. The
telescope
will be set up on the lower side of the upper pond. Please proceed
down and
park around the pond.

Each session will last for an hour or so, and take place rain or
shine. Be
certain to bring your lounging chair for more comfortable viewing, your
binoculars. In the case of rain, we will
adjourn to the Humphreys House and discuss various aspects of the
starry sky
and those potential holiday telescope purchases. Free to the public.
