With limited funding and staff, I don't see how you guys accomplish so much with so little. I appreciate you all. - Barbara

Life in a banana republic...

The bananas (or at least the non-functioning banana) have been delivered and the campus may now communicate, via telephone, with Mr. Russell of the History department at 4579.

The directory banana, however, is not a banana at all, but rather is a tool to be updated by each department (in the case of the printed directory) or employee (in the case of People.utc.edu website *)...not TELECOMM.

The Telecomm staff has always managed to pull off incredible feats for this campus like getting departments moved without notice or at the last minute before a crisis ensues. Our normal turnaround time for repairs is 1 business day (2 weeks for work orders).

If you are having trouble getting your phone repaired, please contact me or my Director, Monty Wilson...preferably before slamming us in the open campus forum.

Subject: [UTCSTAFF] Life in a Banana Republic

Over the years I have often thought that I was working in a Banana
Republic. Without the bananas. This is the fifth day in a row that my
office phone has not worked. Its red light for the answering machine
is on, but there is no dial tone. This happened earlier last week but
the phone spontaneously repaired itself. No such luck this time.

I understand that the telephone repair staff must have a lot to do.
These phones have lots of bells and whistles to go awry. Still,
unlike most of the faculty at this time of the year, as a department
head I have to be here every day. I do have a cell phone,
fortunately. But that number is not listed in the UTC phone
directory. Come to think of it, never mind. That directory was out of
date last year. My office number was in it but not a lot of new numbers. Maybe
we should save money by going back to the old phones and use the savings
to print a new directory.

My apologies to the faculty for sending the same basic message again. I had the
wrong address before. I wanted staff to see it too. We all work in
the same place,
though as George Orwell put it, some animals are more equal than others.
