Linda Chavez Speaks - Tim Chavez Critiques November 1

Linda Chavez, President of the Center for Equal Opportunity, will address
"Affirmative Action" on Thursday, November 1, at 12:00 Noon, in the Roland
Hayes Hall. Ms. Chavez states that she opposes racial preferences because
they are unfair, unconstitutional, and do not achieve their intended
purpose of helping minorities. She also contends that college admissions
programs aimed at minorities are a notorious example of good intentions
gone awry. This event, sponsored by the Probasco Chair as part of the
Burkett Miller Distinguished Lecture Series, is free and open to the
public; however, seating is limited and is on a first-come, first-served
basis.

Mr. Tim Chavez (no relation), columnist for the Nashville Tennessean, will
critique Ms. Chavez's presentation. Tim Chavez is noted for his liberal
columns specifically on Hispanic and minority issues such as bilingual
education. He recently won the Will Rogers Humanitarian Award from National
Society of Newspaper Columnists.

Linda Chavez writes a weekly syndicated column that appears in newspapers
across the country. She is the author of Out of the Barrio: Toward a New
Politics of Hispanic Assimilation (Basic Books 1991), which the Denver Post
described as a book that "should explode the stereotypes about Hispanics
that have clouded the minds of patronizing liberals and xenophobic
conservatives alike." In 2000, Linda Chavez was honored by the Library of
Congress as a "Living Legend" for her contributions to America's cultural
and historical legacy.
