PHI MU ALPHA SINFONIA NATIONAL HONORARY INITIATE ANNOUNCED

ROLAND M. CARTER, Beta Epsilon (New York Univ.) '65
National Honorary Initiate for the 2006 National Convention

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia is pleased to announce that it will bestow
National Honorary Membership upon distinguished composer-arranger and
conductor ROLAND CARTER during the 2006 National Convention. Carter is
the current President of the National Association of Negro Musicians,
and his arrangement of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" is the NAACP's
official arrangement and the one most often used to present this anthem
in formal settings.

Carter currently holds the position of Ruth S. Holmerg UC Foundation
Professor of Music at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Carter served as Head of the Cadek Department of Music and Conservatory
for six years (1989-1995). Prior to returning to his hometown to accept
this assignment, he chaired the department of music at Hampton
(Institute) University and served as director of its internationally
acclaimed choirs for nearly a quarter century.

Carter's list of presentations during the past thirty years is
impressive. It includes concerts in the nation's most prestigious
venues and with major orchestras; lectures, workshops, master classes,
and festivals for schools, churches, colleges, and universities
throughout the country. His compositions and arrangements are performed
by music organizations throughout the world. Carter has produced and
appeared on programs for national and international radio and
television. He is in constant demand as guest conductor and lecturer
and maintains a very active schedule of workshops and performances.

Carter's attainments are well documented. Critics throughout the world
have hailed his excellence in the choral arts, and he has received
numerous awards and honors for his outstanding achievements in choral
music. For his notable contributions to the performance and
preservation of African American music, Carter's biography and list of
compositions are included in "Our Musical Heritage," a catalog published
jointly by Carl Fischer Music and the National Association of Negro
Musicians. He has received national awards from, and has been
recognized by the National Association of Negro Musicians and the
National Black Music Caucus. He was selected to conduct the inaugural
concert of the African American Music Series at Carnegie Hall. In
review of that performance, New York Times critic Allan Konzinn wrote
that the Choir conducted by Carter "...produced a rich, warm sound and
gave irresistibly vibrant performances."

A life member of the National Association of Negro Musicians, Carter has
served on its Board of Directors and as Chair of the Committee on Choral
Standards. He is also a life member of the American Choral Directors
Association. Other affiliations include Music Educators National
Conference, the Music Teachers National Association, Phi Mu Alpha
Sinfonia, and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Carter has served as a member
and co-chair of the NEA Music Advisory Panel for Choruses. He sits on
several community boards and committees including the Chattanooga
African American Museum and the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera
Association. Carter is Music Director of the Chattanooga Choral Society
for the Preservation of African American Songs (CCSPAAS),
Choirmaster-Organist for the First Baptist Church (East Eighth Street,
Chattanooga) and Music director for the Hampton University Ministers
Conference.

He is founder and CEO of MAR-VEL, a publisher specializing in music by
African American composers and traditions.
