The Tennessee Arts Commission announced its 2003 Governor’s Awards in the
Arts, honoring individuals and organizations that are major contributors to
the “creative, artistic, and cultural life of all Tennesseans.” This year
UTC was honored twice as Dr. Roland Carter was selected for a Distinguished
Artist Award, and the Southeast Center for Education in the Arts was
recognized with an Arts Leadership Award. The Governor’s Awards in the Arts
are Tennessee’s highest honor in this field, so UTC is extremely proud of
Dr. Carter and the Southeast Center for Education in the Arts (SCEA).

Dr. Carter is a nationally acclaimed composer, conductor, and pianist, who
serves as the Ruth S. Holmberg Professor of American Music in the Cadek
Conservatory of Music. He is a leading figure in the choral arts, and is
considered an authority on the performance and preservation of
African-American music.

The Southeast Center for Education in the Arts was founded in 1988 to
provide innovative professional development opportunities for instructors in
the arts. The Center's mission is to enhance education by integrating the
arts throughout the curriculum. The Governor’s Awards ceremony, “A Salute
to Excellence,” will take place next month at Nashville’s historic Ryman
Auditorium.

Congratulations to Dr. Carter and to the Southeast Center for Education in
the Arts! These awards bring recognition to UTC as an institution that
values and supports the arts, and they underscore the important
contributions that Dr. Carter and SCEA make to the preservation and
promotion of the arts locally and regionally.
