The Help Desk has been monitoring a steady increase in e-mails related to
viruses over the past few weeks and particularly over the past few days with
the "Klez" worm. So long as you have a up-to-date copy of Norton Antivirus
installed on your computer, these messages are mostly an annoyance rather
than a danger. However, it would be advisable for everyone on campus to run
a virus scan and to check to be sure that their virus definitions are
up-to-date (see procedure below).

If you are receiving e-mails from other people saying that your computer
tried to infect theirs, or you are getting "undeliverable mail" messages
back that you know you never sent, it does NOT necessarily mean your
computer is infected. When the Klez worm is sent out from an infected
computer, it does not use that computer's return address, but instead
chooses another one at random that is known to that computer. In other
words, if my computer is infected, it may put your return address on the
outgoing virus messages so it looks like the messages are coming from you.
Symantec has a good description of Klez available at

<[log in to unmask]" target="_blank">http:[log in to unmask]>
.

Symantec says, "If you are using a current version of Norton AntiVirus, have
the most recent virus definitions, and a full system scan with Norton
AntiVirus set to scan all files does not find anything, you can be confident
that your computer is not infected with this worm."

TO RUN A FULL SCAN:

You should see a gold shield in the bottom right corner of your screen
beside your clock. Double click on the gold shield this will bring up
Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition.

On the first screen check your Virus Definition file and make sure the
definitions are dated for June 2002. Then click on Scan, you will have two
options. Select the option to Scan Computer.

On the right side of the screen you should see a My Computer icon and some
drives listed below. Click the mouse in the box beside (C:) this will put a
check mark in the box and press scan at the bottom right of the window.
This will start the scan of your computer.

Please call the Help Desk if you have any questions.

Thank you,
