The Walker Teaching Resource Center will host a satellite teleconference on
Thursday, April 19, 2:30 - 4:00 in the Signal Mountain Room on Staying the
Course: Retaining Online Students. Please come!

Participants will learn how successful online course instructors and
administrators address the following issues and use them to increase
student retention in online courses. Issues to be addressed include:
--The significance of the lack of agreement on the definition of retention
and academic achievement.
--Ways to evaluate students' suitability for online courses before they
enroll.
--Intervention strategies to keep students engaged in the course.
--Key features of good online courses.
--The importance of providing options for students with different learning
styles in online courses.
--Approaches for involving mentors in supporting students and faculty
members in online courses.
--The why and how of providing training and on-going feedback and guidance
to instructors who teach online.

The teleconference will also address using e-mail effectively and
efficiently; providing academic advisement administrative student support,
and technical support; holding virtual office hours; using increasingly
sophisticated technology to work smarter, not harder; and discovering and
addressing students' sense of being overwhelmed and overloaded.

We will be videotaping the teleconference and it will be available for
check out through the Walker Teaching Resource Center after Monday, April
23, 2001.
