Friends,

The Health Sciences Coalition from the College of Health, Education and
Professional Studies invites all UTC students, faculty and staff to
participate with us in UTC On The Move, a sister program to the Tennessee
On The Move program announced by Dr. Peterson last month designed to help
all of us achieve healthier lifestyles.

Many faculty and staff on campus have already chosen to participate in the
Tennessee On The Move initiative by purchasing pedometers and pledging to
increase their number of daily steps by 2000 over their current
baseline. We think it would be fun to help meet this goal by joining
together for 2000 step walks around campus.

Our first UTC On The Move activity will be daily guided 2000 step walks
that will begin next Wednesday, Oct. 6th and will continue through
Wednesday, October 20. The walking groups will leave from the front of the
University Center each day at 12:10 and will return no later than
12:40. There will be several different groups that will walk at varying
speeds, so you can select the pace of walking most comfortable for
you. Everyone who would like to join in please meet in front of the
University Center at 12:10 wearing comfortable walking shoes. Faculty,
staff and students are all welcome!! Walk with us one day, or join us
every day...your choice...just come out to enjoy these beautiful fall days
and help get UTC On The Move.

The first goal of the Tennessee On The Move program is to help folks
increase their activity level by 2000 steps a day over their current
baseline. The second goal is to reduce their caloric intake by 100
calories per day in an attempt to better balance calories in versus
calories out. Be on the lookout for hints on RAVEN for ways that you can
easily accomplish these two simple goals by making only minor adjustments
in your current activity and eating patterns.

November 5, 2004 has been designated as America On The Move Day. The
Health Sciences Coalition hopes that UTC will encourage our entire
Chattanooga community engage in this healthy initiative. The 2000-step
noon walks will be our first UTC On The Move event, and we anticipate that
there will be more to follow throughout the year.

Mark your calendars and come join us on Wednesday, October 6 at 12:10 in
front of the UC for our first 2000 step noon walk.

Hope to see you then.
