The Siskin Student Microcomputer Lab is an open, general use facility for
student use in the preparation of multi-disciplinary materials and other
academic functions while a part of the university community.

The move of the labs to Siskin Hall has eliminated classroom instruction in
our labs. However, we are experimenting with a portable lab cart, currently
only available in Fletcher Hall (through summer 2002). To utilize this
portable lab cart for the FALL 2002 term, the professor must FIRST secure a
room with TABLES (NOT desks) in Davenport, Fletcher, Frist, Davenport or
Metro Hall. Please understand we will not set up in a room with individual
desks. Please double check that the room you reserve does have tables, this
saves a wasted class period. After room approval, use the Reserve the Lab
http://cecasun.utc.edu/~hunterla/faculty/reserve_labs.html. Please remember
we need three weeks notice due to manpower issues and network configuration
check. Setup can require a full hour in exceptional circumstances, it is
helpful to have the room empty the hour prior to class. CAUTION: we
already have dates on our calendar. Please schedule room first and then the
lab, and do so EARLY.

We are able to accommodate 24 users total. Please instruct students to
bring a NEW, 1.44 meg floppy to save any work done on these laptops. No
printing or other method of saving is available in this configuration. In
exceptional circumstances, printing is possible. This will require 4 weeks
notice due to the additional equipment required. We ask the professor to
provide paper. We bring the printer with us if approved.

Don't forget that projectors, microphones, etc., are still ordered through
Media Resources http://www.utc.edu/MediaResources/Onlineform.htm.

If you would like to make software for your discipline available to
students in the lab, you must obtain a server copy and academic site
license for 35 Dell (Win98 compatible) or 25 Mac (Mac OS 9 compatible)
computers 30 days prior to classes convening. Use our form to arrange for
installation
http://cecasun.utc.edu/~hunterla/faculty/software_installation.html after
obtaining this server based software.

Software included in the back of current textbooks will not run without
actually installing it on a personal computer. Installation of these
textbook copies could void the license for the student and would expose the
university to copyright liability issues if the software was installed on
more than one computer. Every year we seem to have students upset when they
are unable to properly follow a project from academic software in a
textbook. Your assistance in this important detail is appreciated. Advance
preparation will provide the maximum functionality and minimum frustration
for your students.

Other options for faculty who wish to have their students use
discipline-specific software for their class include demonstrating that
software in the classroom using a laptops available from the Help
Desk http://www.utc.edu/helpdesk/equip_main.htm and data projectors
available from Media
Resources. http://www.utc.edu/MediaResources/Onlineform.htm

If you wish, you may provide paper copies of software related student
assignments to the Labs. Our student assistants will work to become
familiar with the assignment to better help your students complete it.
Contact me at [log in to unmask] to properly place these materials. If you
need help constructing the assignment, contact the Teaching Resource Center
http://www.utc.edu/Teaching-Resource-Center/ . We strongly advise making
the Student Labs aware of software requirements for assignments you create
or administer via Blackboard. We see most of these lessons due to student
questions. If you advise us in advance, we try to ensure that each of our
workers is prepared for the many questions.

Best Wishes for the Fall Semester
