Dear Colleagues,

The winner of the 2002 North Callahan Essay Contest is Ben Williams, for his
clever and elegant essay, "William Blake by Samuel Johnson by Ben Williams."
Many congratulations to Ben! He will receive a check for $1000 on Honors
Day, April 9. The runner up on the contest was Jeremy Henderson for his
well-researched and cleanly-written paper, "Railroads and the Face of the
American Landscape."

To read Ben's essay, or the winning essays from 2000 and 2001, please see
http://cecasun.utc.edu/univhon/Callahan.html.

The contest is supported by an endowment sponsored by Dr. North Callahan,
distinguished UC alumnus, former professor of history at NYU, and author of
many books on American history.

Allow me to acknowledge the noble work of Professors Jim Ward and Bill
Wright, who graciously served with me as judges for this year's competition.
