The College of Education and Applied Professional Studies has received
$242,686 for the third year of a five-year program entitled: Cultural
Competencies for Teachers and Educational Personnel. This program is designed
to address the growing need for English as a Second Language (ESL) certified
teachers in both Hamilton County and Cleveland City schools as the number of
ESL students continues to grow.

This program recruits 10 preservice and 10 inservice teachers each
year to certification programs that will provide more ESL-certified
teachers to the region. In addition, the program provides
foreign language and methods classes to current inservice teachers, school
administrators and support staff to help address the gaps in educational
services to ESL students and their families. These ESL training activities
will improve the quality of education for Limited English Proficient
students,
better equipping them for academic success.

This program exemplifies the strong partnership UTC has developed
with local schools. UTC’s continued efforts to improve the
knowledge and skills of preservice and inservice teachers reflects
well on UTC.

Congratulations to the College of Education and Applied Professional Studies,
and good luck with this program!
