A few of you have noticed, even though I tried to keep it as transparent
as possible, that we now have a new server doing the job of handling the
primary UTC web site: http://www.utc.edu/. This server is no longer
Cecasun and it's only mission in life is to serve web pages that are
maintained here in the office of University Relations. These are
primarily the administrative departments on campus and general
information type pages. We have lots of plans for fancy capabilities, and
moving to a separate server was the first step in that direction.
The impact of this is that the proper address for you to give out for
departmental pages or your personal ones, should be changed to use the
URL using 'cecasun' instead of 'www' since your pages still reside on
Cecasun. For example:
Old address: http://www.utc.edu/~cchase/
New address: http://cecasun.utc.edu/~cchase/
If you have an 'alias' which allows you to perhaps use a different name,
it works similarly:
Old address: http://www.utc.edu/Teaching-Resource-Center/
New address: http://cecasun.utc.edu/Teaching-Resource-Center/
If your pages were written without specifying the server name in your
links for other pages YOU maintain, they will work perfectly--that is the
proper way to do any web page you maintain. Only external links should
specify a server, as required. That now includes the administrative pages
as being external to yours.
For example if you have a link in a page that refers to a list of syllabi
they should appear like this, in general:
<a href="web101.htm">Web 101</a>
<a href="web102.htm">Web 102</a>
<a href="web103.htm">Web 103</a>
NOT <a href="http://cecasun.utc.edu/web101.htm">Web 101<</a>
For reference to a subdirectory, don't include a leading '/':
<a href="courses/web101.htm">Web 101<</a>
This also applies to form actions and scripts referred to as well.
If you need to refer to an administrative page or any page not hosted by
the same server as your page, then you will include the server name:
<a href="http://www.utc.edu/Records-Registration/">Records &
Registration</a>
As we are aware of many pages out there that are not necessarily written
in this format, and have links directly to 'www.utc.edu', we have
configured the WWW web server to redirect those requests automatically to
Cecasun. This keeps your pages from breaking, while giving you time to
update your pages to the proper style of links. (You may have noticed
over the weekend that there were several pages not functioning, since I
didn't catch Everything... Oh, well. Hopefully they are now.) If you do
find any of your pages are non-functional since these changes were made,
please notify me and I will see if I can fix the problem globally to
solve everyone's problems, while giving you time to maintain your pages
at your convenience.
For marketing purposes, we will maintain the redirects, so if for a
brochure or something similar a department wants to use for example:
http://www.utc.edu/Teaching-Resource-Center/ it will work. But, when it
comes up in the end-users browser, it will display 'cecasun' instead of
'www' as noted above. In relation to that, as a reminder, the primary
campus address given out will be: http://www.utc.edu/ and the 'Academics'
link on the navigation bar at the bottom, includes links to all
departments on that page. (If some department is not linked by accident,
please let me know!)
If you have any questions regarding these changes or need assistance in
updating your pages, please feel free to contact me. We are in the
process of setting up a UTCWeb listserve for web page creators on campus
for the exchange of ideas specifically on web page issues. Another
anouncement to UTCStaff will be made when it is ready, inviting participants.
Thank you for your time!
