Some of you have pointed out that there are indeed faculty who abuse their
position of authority and power in the classroom to intimidate students.
Bob Levy has sent information on other campus policy. UTC too has long had
a policy against such objectionable behavior. Section 5.3.1 of the Faculty
Handbook covers relationships in the classroom and student rights and
responsibilities, to wit:

Freedom of Expression. Free and pertinent discussion is welcome at the
University. Students should feel free to take reasoned exception to the
data or views offered in any course of study and to reserve judgement about
matters of opinion.

Some may think that may not be adequate, but it does not introduce Big
Brother into the classroom. Another faculty member has perused the Academic
Freedom website and came up with these revealing gems:

"Students are lazy and will complain if they get assigned readings or
controversial topics to think about." And you have already been alerted to
this statement: "University professors are a privileged elite that work
between six to nine hours a week, eight months a year for an annual salary
of about $150,000"

I do not know what planet or drug these people are on, but it does not
apply to UTC...in my opinion, of course.
