Happy October everyone;

October is Disability Awareness Month. We have many things planned for
your education and enjoyment.

Please find time in your busy schedule to attend one or more of our
activities. We would also appreciate if you would offer some kind of
incentive to your students to get them to come to these activities as
well. We could also provide test questions for the session, so the
students that attend can get extra points on their tests. The list of
activities is as follows:

A night at the movies. We will be showing The Horse Whisperer.

girl and her horse and severe injury to a second girl and her horse. The
survivor, Grace, has lost the lower half of one leg and she is severely
traumatized by seeing her best friend killed. Her horse is also
traumatized. Her parents have difficulty coping with her condition and
her mother decides to travel to Montana to see a 'horse whisperer'
hoping he can help the horse and through that her daughter.

The movie will begin promptly at 5:00 followed by a discussion about the
portrayal of people with disabilities in this film.

FAC 356

5:00-7:30

A Night at the movies. We will be showing Nell

Set in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains contrasted with urban
ugliness. Jodie Foster is a young woman who has been brought up by her
mother who had suffered a stroke in the deep backwoods. She is found by
a doctor (Liam

Neeson) after her mother has died but she is unable to speak except in
a language known only to her mother. The doctor becomes her teacher; she
becomes our teacher for this is another film in which those with
learning difficulties/autism are associated with the natural, a life we
have lost, and what might be good for us. A worthy film, worthy
performances, Foster headed for an Oscar even if some might see the
bones beneath the skin

The movie will begin promptly at 5:00 followed by a discussion about the
portrayal of people with disabilities in this film.

Friday October 28, 2005

*Administrators Adopt a Disability Day: Administrators form UTC will
adopt a disability to live with for the day. They will go about their

activity will culminate in a panel discussion including those
participants and students of UTC that live with disabilities every day.
The panel discussion is scheduled for 3:30 in the UC (?)

*Disability Awareness Fair

Booths will be set up for participants to learn through fun experiences
about aspects of disabilities ranging form mobility to communication.
