Dear Faculty and Staff,

The Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Geography has two new
elective courses this Fall. They are:

ANTH 228/499: "The Archaeology of Latin America."
This course is a general introduction to the Pre-Hispanic archaeology
of Latin America with emphasis on the Olmec, Maya, Inca, and Aztec
cultures. This course provides students the opportunity to study the rise
and fall of the civilizations of the Olmec, Maya, Inca, and the Aztec. The
archaeology of Latin America will provide the foundation needed to
understand the cultural dynamics of modern day Central and South America.

ANTH 229/499: :"Peoples and Cultures of Latin America."
This introductory course will explore contemporary Latin American
issues and cultures from anthropological perspective. The course will cover
both the theoretical and applied works of selected anthropologists in
MesoAmerica and South America. The Pre-Columbian cultures of Maya, Aztec,
and Inca civilizations will be surveyed. The course will review colonialism
and independence factors and their impact on indigenous Latin America
today. Such cultures as Jivaro, Nahua, Mixtec, Maya, and Huichol, among
others, will be studied to illustrate specific issues such as rain-forest
destruction, sociopolitical and economic systems among indigenous peoples,
rural to urban migration, labor migration and immigration to the United
States, and struggles for survival of the native cultures of Latin America.

Please bring these two courses to the attention of your students. These two
courses were approved by the UTC Curriculum Committee as ANTH 228 and ANTH 229
respectively, but they are listed on the Fall 2001 schedule as ANTH 499.
They are purely introductory courses and designed for Freshman and
Sophomore students, and, of course, for Juniors and Seniors also.

Thank you.
