The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sport Research Digest
(September, 2006) published an interesting statement:
"The essential cause of the increase in overweight among children and
adolescents is caloric imbalance, which results from inadequate physical
activity, poor dietary choices, or both. These behaviors are influenced by
many sectors of society, including families, community organizations, health
care providers, faith-based institutions, government agencies, the media,
and schools. None of these sectors can solve the childhood obesity epidemic
on its own; however it is unlikely to be solved without strong school-based
policies and programs."
THE SOLUTION:
Provide evidence-based strategies for schools:
1. Address physical activity and nutrition through a Coordinated School
Health Program which is planned, sequential and integrated into the school.
2. Designate a school health coordinator and maintain an active school
health council.
3. Assess the school's health policies and programs and develop a plan for
improvement.
4.Strengthen the school's physical activity and nutrition policies.
5. Implement a high-quality school employee wellness program.
6. Implement a high-quality health education course of study.
7. Implement a high-quality physical activity/physical education course of
study.
