Earlier this year UT and Dell entered into a strategic partnership which
provides discounted prices for both institutional and personal purchases.
For desktop systems the savings are typically insignificant, but prices on
Latitude laptops are the exception. If you are thinking of purchasing a
laptop, I highly recommend visiting the UT/Dell site at
http://www.cas.utk.edu/depts/pam/dellpricelist.html.
A fully-loaded Pentium III 850Mhz Latitude C600 (including 255MB of RAM,
DVD, Zip drive, and port replicator) can be had for less than $2,500 (the
recommended specs are pasted in below...prices are about $150 higher for
personal purchases). If you need a faster video processor, a 15" display,
and a 1000 MHz processor, that can be had in a C800 system for under $3,000,
but the C600 will be more than adequate for business (non-gaming) use.
As always, our recommendations for other computer purchases can be found at
http://www.utc.edu/helpdesk/hardware.htm.
