Number of Awards: Approximately 25
Grant Activity: Participate in a group seminar on current German
society and culture. Participants will examine the political, social, and
economic institutions of Germany, including the five new states in eastern
Germany, in light of their recent history and current development. Each
seminar has a specific thematic focus. The program will begin in Berlin and
include visits to other cities in eastern and western Germany.
Additional Qualifications: Ph.D. candidates who hold full-time
teaching appointments and meet other requirements are eligible.
Length of Grant: 3 weeks
Starting Date: Mid-June 2000
Comments: The 2000 seminar will be conducted in English, and the topic
will be "History and Memory: Jewish Past and Present in Germany." The
seminar is designed for American scholars of German studies and of
disciplines related to the seminar topic. Applications are welcome from
U.S. college, university, and community college scholars. The seminar's
perspective is interdisciplinary; applications are invited from professors
of German
language and literature, German history, political science, and other
humanities and social sciences related to the seminar topic, specifically
Jewish studies and Holocaust studies. Experts in the seminar topic, as well
as nonexperts with an interest in the topic, are encouraged to apply.
The award includes round-trip transportation; per diem allowance for meals,
lodging, local travel, and incidental expenses; and the opportunity to stay
in Europe after the seminar to pursue individual research projects. Grantee
spouses and dependents cannot be accommodated during the seminar.
Participants will be asked to submit a brief report and evaluation. See
