BOOKS & COFFEE

The next meeting of "Books & Coffee," a forum for public discussion, will be
held on Tuesday, January 21, 7:30 PM, at Fathom Liquid Art, located at 412
Market Street.

Our presenter will be Professor Michael Linton, Professor of Music at Middle
Tennessee State University, who will speak on Carson Holloway's
controversial book "All Shook Up: Music, Passion, and Politics." Holloway's
book created a mild sensation when it appeared, arguing forcefully that our
present-day debates about music and its effects upon "character" are vitally
important but hopelessly confused. Neither "liberals" nor "conservatives" in
our age, Holloway contends, have been able to understand either the dangers
or the benefits of musical expression. Previous societies in human history
have not been so naive, however, and Holloway's book points toward a
reassessment of our views about music, in light of the experiences and
insights of the past.

Professor Linton, who is an accomplished composer, performer, musicologist,
and music theorist, will engage Holloway's argument, and offer perspectives
of his own, complete with musical illustrations. It should be a stimulating,
thought-provoking evening. "Books & Coffee" is cosponsored by UTC's SunTrust
Chair of Excellence in Humanities and Covenant College. The event is
free---and so is the Greyfriar's coffee! The general public is warmly
invited.
