Bush Selects Poet for Arts Position
By THE NEW YORK TIMES
President Bush yesterday announced his intention to nominate the poet,
critic and anthologist Dana Gioia to be chairman of the National Endowment
for the Arts. If confirmed by the Senate for the four-year term, Mr.
Gioia, 51, the author of three books of poetry and a winner of the
American Book Award, would succeed Michael P. Hammond, who died in January
after a week in the post.
Reacting to the president's announcement, Mr. Gioia (pronounced JOY-uh)
said: "I am particularly excited by the opportunity to help guide an
agency whose role is so important to our society and culture. The arts
enliven and enlarge our humanity. Especially in such challenging times,
they nourish the spirit of our nation."
