Hello, everyone.

I will keep my comments short. The current political climate espouses that
the arts should function on private funding, that the artists in this
country do not serve a vital function in the education and lives of its
people.

Think about it. What would your family's life be without music, theatre,
film, dance, paintings and sculpture (place these in any order)?

>Subject: ArtsChatt for the week of August 27, 2001

>
>Last week, I wrote about how the arts can make a big difference in our
>children's education and how Allied Arts is working to make the arts a part
>of their lives.
>
>This week, I want to share some sad news with you about how budget woes at
>the state are impacting funds which help us bring the arts to children.
>We've just learned that funding we receive from the Tennessee Arts
>Commission to subsidize the cost of tickets and transportation to enable
>needy children to attend cultural field trips will be cut by 25% this year,
>or about $10,000. Even worse, all funds for the program will most likely be
>eliminated by the state next year. Literally thousands of children will be
>impacted by these cuts. In the most recently completed school year, Allied
>Arts helped send over 44,000 children on cultural field trips. We won't be
>able to help nearly as many next year under the current state budget plan.
>
>All aspects of state government are being impacted by the state's fiscal
>situation. If you're thinking about contacting your state representative to
>voice your opinion on the state's finances, I hope you'll remember the arts,
>too.
>
>Despite the bad news, Allied Arts will continue its commitment to the arts
>in education. On Thursday, August 30, we'll be holding our annual Arts Expo
>at the Hunter Museum for teachers and anyone interested in the arts in our
>schools. You're welcome to come and find out about the education programs
>our city's arts organizations will be offering this year for in-class and
>field trip opportunities.
>
>Nighfall this Friday features the acoustic, folk sounds of singer-songwriter
>Stacey Earle, a popular favorite on bluegrass and folk festival circuits.
>
>The Chattanooga Theatre Centre kicks off its new season this Friday, as
>well, with performances of "Talking With. . ." in the Circle Theatre, and
>concert performances of the musical, "Celebration". Written by the duo who
>also wrote the long-running Broadway hit "The Fantastiks", "Celebration" is
>a moving look at life and the need to allow the new to replace the old. The
>Theatre Centre is planning a series this year that they're calling "The Lost
>Musicals" to present in concert style (that is, not staged) many Broadway
>musicals that haven't had the quantity of productions which the quality of
>their music really warrants. Hats off the CTC for trying some adventurous
>programming this year.
>
>Saturday, September 1, the Association for Visual Artists and Hamilton
>County Parks and Recreation will present the 12th annual Artist Walk at the
>Tennessee River Park, beginning at 10:00. You can end the day relaxing at
>Coolidge Park to the sounds of the Chattanooga Concert Band in a free
>concert of pops and patriotic music, show tunes and marches. The concert
>begins at 7:00. Bring a blanket and a picnic.
>
>This edition of ArtsChatt is longer than most we send-lots of things going
>on. Next week's newsletter will come out on Tuesday, since we'll all be
>celebrating Labor Day. I hope you enjoy the holiday.
>
>This newsletter is just a brief highlight of what's going on in the arts
>this week. For information on times, locations, and ticket purchasing for
