The campus modems are working! However, this will only be on a temporary
basis until the Fall 1999 semester begins. Neither Administration, nor the
University Technology Committee has found it feasible to fund the required
equipment to provide this service. I personally felt it was a NEEDED
service, so I found the necessary equipment from Dr. Terry Walters (Math,)
and Mike Ward (CECA.) Software has been loaded so it will automatically
Telnet to CecaSun or MoccaSun. There are only four dial-in lines, three
off-campus lines and one on-campus. The off-campus number is the same
(265-2664,) as well as the on-campus (4971.) But, due to the limited numbers
of lines please use the service to check mail only and avoid extended
connection times for other purposes. Also, due to the limited lines, when
advising your classes of the availability of this service, please highly
recommend that they obtain an off-campus Internet Service Provider (ISP.)
See: http://www.utc.edu/helpdesk/isp.html . The reason behind the one
on-campus line is to provide service to those dorms, North Stadium and
Boling, that do not yet have network connections available-these will be
networked by Fall. All other dorms have network connections available, which
should be used instead of the modems. We are also suggesting that any
Faculty and Staff using this service to obtain an ISP by Fall also.

Thank you in advance for your assistance and interest. As this system has
not had in depth testing, please let me know if you have any serious
difficulties. I have already noticed occasionally that a connection may
appear to 'hang,' but it only pauses for about 30-45 seconds and then
continues right where it left off with no loss. I will continue to see if I
can figure out what that problem is-but due to the lack of support it is NOT
a high priority. Also, we are still using the very old 14.4K modems, and
several have been discovered as bad in early testing-it may happen again!

If you run into the Dr. Walters or Mike Ward, and you use the service,
please say 'Thank You!' Also, thanks go to Monty Wilson and Network Services
for continuing to pay for the incoming phone lines and for working with me
to find the appropriate equipment required.
