Dr. Hunter Huckabay, Director of UTC's GEAR UP programs with Hamilton
County Schools, has received two grants totaling $710,662 from the
U.S. Department of Education to continue funding for the programs. GEAR
UP I is in the fourth year of a five year program and GEAR UP II is in the
third year of a five year program. The GEAR UP programs focus on providing
support services to address gaps in current educational and social services
to inner city schools in Hamilton County.

Dr. Huckabay received $297,779 for GEAR UP I, a program that brings support
services into Franklin, Orchard Knob and Chattanooga Middle schools. He
received $412,883 for GEAR UP II to bring support services to
Dalewood Middle School and East Lake Fine Arts Academy.

The GEAR UP programs provide students with tutoring, study skills training,
test taking and critical thinking skills, mentoring and instruction in
healthy lifestyles and life skills training. These programs also offer
students and their parents long-term assistance in class selection and
financial aid and college admissions information.

Teachers in GEAR UP schools also are provided with support groups
and workshops to enhance their teaching skills. UTC faculty and staff
are paired with Hamilty County Schools personnel and 13 other community
partners to implement these support services that will result in
higher academic attainment, higher college enrollment of graduates from these
schools, increased parent involvement and enriched preparation for teachers.
GEAR UP I and II emphasize UTC’s and the local community’s commitment to
improve educational and social services to inner city schools.

Congratulations to Dr. Huckabay, and good luck with the continuation of these
programs!
