To Whom It May Concern:

The e-mails on Dog food and Cat food prompted this reply. We have a
chocolate Lab that is about six years old. He was fed with Beneful at the
recommendation of our Vet Doctor. About two years ago, we switched his food
to Nature's Recipe, a purely vegetarian food that is sold by Pet-Smart, and
the only such product available in the market. We were motivated to make
this change when we read in a book that pet food manufacturers pay money to
Humane Societies for the diseased and dead carcasses of animals that have to
be put to sleep. They make pet food from this source. Everyone is aware of
what happened in England when cattle were fed food that contained portions
of dead animals.

It is my understanding that the USDA only requires pet food manufacturers to
list in a general way the ingredients contained in pet foods. On the
other hand, foods for human consumption require manufacturers to list every
ingredient in descending order of magnitude. Our Lab made the transition
between the two dog foods immediately, without knowing the difference.
