Dear Colleague,

Thank you for the early leadership you are giving to Chattanooga's United
Way. This is an amazingly generous community, and certainly our faculty
and staff are fully participating members of this community of givers.

An interesting phenomenon to me is that while gifts we have made to the
community through the United Way have more than doubled over the four or
five years that I have been privileged to be associated with you, UTC
friends in the community have quadrupled their giving to us. That
quadrupling happened even before the unprecedented new gift of
$25,000,000! This community really appreciates UTC.

I note around the campus that we have passed the $50,000 mark on our way to
a campaign goal of $85,000. Great! I appreciate Vice Chancellor Brown -
especially Mary Scott! - and their committees for their help in
coordinating our campaign. They have attempted to get a United Way pledge
card in all our hands. If you have not seen your card yet, please call
Mary Scott at 4293. Most of us use a payroll deduction form. The yellow
card allows you to specify your wishes.

Those of you who have been here a while know that Chattanooga is one of the
very few United Ways around the country where an endowment pays all their
operating expenses, and every dollar contributed goes directly to the
agency or service you intend to help. You can specify exactly whom you
want to get your money, leave the distribution to the United Way
allocations committee, or specify exactly whom you do not want to get your
money.

Some local services are indicating that they are experiencing some
apprehension over local giving just now as many dollars have understandably
been sent to New York. If we can, let's try to keep on pace with our
support of Chattanooga's health and human service providers. It is a great
city in which to live. UTC enriches the community in so many ways. Your
support of United Way is one of them.

Thanks,

Bill
