Dr. Tim Gaudin of Biology and Environmental Sciences has been awarded a
Research in Undergraduate Institutions (RUI) grant -- one of the most
prestigious grants made by the National Science Foundation (NSF). RUI
grants are made for meritorious research conducted by students and faculty
in predominately undergraduate institutions. The standards applied to
judge the scientific merits of the research are the same as those applied
for research conducted at major research institutions.

UTC has received only one other RUI grant in its history.

Dr. Gaudin's project, "The Early Evolution of the Pholidota and a
Reexamination of the Monophyly of the Cohort Edentata (Mammalia)," has been
funded for $126,388 over a three-year period. During the summers Dr.
Gaudin will gather data at some of the world's most important fossil
collections including the Field Museum of Natural History (Chicago), the
American Musuem of Natural History (New York), and the Forschungs-Institut
Senckenberg (Frankfurt, Germany). Dr. Gaudin will conduct research at the
National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. while he is on
sabbatical leave in spring 2002.

Congratulations to Dr. Gaudin, and best wishes for the success of this
project.
