The above message title is what yesterday's graduation ceremony
resembled
for me. Each year the crowd in attendance at the May graduation seems
rowdier than ever. Yesterday's group took the prize. [...]44_10May200210:55:[log in to unmask]

TIBETAN BUDDHIST MONKS WILL CONSTRUCT A MANDALA SAND PAINTING AND PERFORM
SPECIAL CEREMONIES AT THE AVA GALLERY

Tibetan Buddhist Monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery will construct a
mandala sand painting from Tuesday, May 14 to Sunday May 19, 2002 at the AVA
Gallery (30 Frazier Avenue). Millions of grains of sand are painstakingly
laid into place in this ancient spiritual art form in order to purify and
heal the environment and its inhabitants. Construction will be taking place
Wednesday through Saturday from 11am –8pm. All events are free and open to
the public.
Closing Ceremony: Sunday, May 19 at 4:30pm

This event is produced by the Shaking Ray Levi Society, in collaboration
with the AVA/ Chattanooga Times-Free Press 4 Bridges Arts Festival.

And that’s not all…
SATURDAY, MAY 18, 2002 AT COOLIDGE PARK

The Shaking Ray Levi Society (SRLS) is proud to present a FREE music event
as part of the AVA/ Chattanooga Times-Free Press 4 Bridges Arts Festival on
Saturday, May 18, 2002. Headlining the Festival will be the fabulous
multiphonic singers from Tibet’s Drepung Loseling Monastery. The Festival
includes an all-star line up of performers, including Vic Chesnutt, Andrew
Bird, Sue Garner, and the Star Room Boys. The event is FREE and open to the
public at Coolidge Park, Chattanooga, TN.

At 8pm, the fabulous multiphonic singers from Tibet’s Drepung Loseling
Monastery will perform traditional temple music and mystical masked dances
as part of their Sacred Music Sacred Dance for World Healing tour. This
extraordinary performance features elaborate costumes, traditional
instruments and unique multiphonic singing. Performance begins at 8pm.

Legendary singer/ songwriter Vic Chesnutt (Athens, GA) will perform his
unique brand of acoustic urban folk music that blends his Southern cynical
outlook with a razor-sharp sense of humor. He has collaborated with many
musicians and performers including Widespread Panic and Lambchop, and pop
star giants such as Madonna and R.E.M. have covered his songs. Performance
begins at 7pm.

Chicago singer/songwriter/violinists Andrew Bird (formerly of the Squirrel
Nut Zippers) updates the traditions of swing and New Orleans Jazz by mixing
gypsy, folk, and rock elements into his distinctive style. Bird will be
accompanied by Nora O’Connor. Performance begins at 4pm.

Indie-rock veteran Sue Garner encompasses experimental rock and alternative
country music genres. She will be joined by vocalist/ guitarist Angel Dean.
Sue Garner is known for her vast array of recordings on the Thrill Jockey
and Matador labels. Performance begins at 2:30pm.

Critically acclaimed, alternative country outfit, the Star Room Boys
(Athens, GA) lean toward a more traditional style of country music. Their
songs have been compared to Americana legends like Merle Haggard and Buck
Owens. Performance begins at 1pm.

The SRLS has presented diverse genres of music and performance throughout
the Southeast for over 15 years. The SRLS is a funded agency of Allied Arts.
