I'm sure you are aware of our rather embarassing bandwidth to the
Internet from campus (the "World Wide Wait"). Network services has been
pursuing this problem for close to a year, but it appears that
our plans may come to fruition in the coming months. However, to avoid
another of my occasional technical diatribes, let me just say that this
is not a "plug and play" scenario.

Two T1 lines have been installed direct to Qwest (http://www.qwest.com)
and we are in the process of testing these lines and, more complex, the
addressing issues involved with having multiple paths to the Internet.
Several volunteers in Computing Services and Network Services have been
testing the new lines over the past few weeks, and after a rather rocky
start, they seem to be relatively stable for the typical desktop. As
a large-scale test of the lines, the dorms were re-routed Tuesday
evening and they appear to be stable.

We are still having problems with 'servers' however -- those machines
which are accessed from off-campus, such as cecasun, moccasun, various
departmental web servers, and so forth. This is preventing further
wholesale conversion to the improved bandwidth. The situation is even
more difficult by not knowing at this point where all of our servers
reside. Therefore...

If you are administering or maintaining a server which is available to
the off-campus Internet, please take a minute to reply to me via email
with the address of your server. This will hopefully avoid any loss of
connectivity with your audience as we work on the transition to our new
bandwidth. Please note that this does *not* apply to servers that are
only used on-campus (e.g., departmental labs), only public servers.

Thanks in advance.
