Subject: Psych O'Cinema Announcement

To All Faculty/Instructors

The Counseling and Career Planning Center reminds all instructors of our
first Psych O'Cinema presentation of the Fall Semester, A Beautiful
Mind.

Psych O'Cinema ("Psychology of the Cinema") is a regular learning series
provided by the Counseling and Career Planning Center using contemporary
movies to address various issues of human development and mental health.
The movie is shown in its entirety, followed by an in-depth discussion
of the issues it raises and how they relate to college-age adults.

We rely on faculty recommendations and announcements in your classes as
our main way of promoting this to students. It can also be used as a
helpful adjunct to instruction for those of you who would like to offer
extra credit for your class. Let us know, and we will have a sign-up
sheet available or provide notes confirming attendance for them to
submit to you (to receive credit, students must be present from the
beginning of the movie to the end of the group discussion). Also, we can
provide you suggested test questions or topics for brief essays if you
request them.

The upcoming program is also sponsored by the Office for Students with
Disabilities. A Beautiful Mind is a moving and wonderfully done story
about overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles. In a period in
which so-called "Action Thrillers," heavy on special effects dominate
the cinema, it was nominated for several Academy Awards, including the
winner for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, and
Best Screenplay. Those of you familiar with the work based partly on his
biography will recall how John Nash (played by Crowe) had his promising
career in mathematics sidetracked by severe mental illness. Through a
combination of his natural genius, his determination, and the support of
others who believed in and loved him, however, he overcame this to
eventually win the 1994 Nobel Prize in Mathematics.

The program will be on Oct. 17 (Tuesday) and will begin at 5 pm in the
Raccoon Mountain Room of the University Center. Flyers will be
distributed soon, so contact us if you would like some sent directly to
you to hand out. You can call us at x4438 or reply directly to this
email.

We look forward to hearing from you.

The Staffs of the Counseling and Career Planning Center and Office for
Students with Disabilities.

P.S. Be on the lookout for our second Psych O'Cinema presentation of the
Fall. On November 14 the featured film will be the provocative
independent production, What the *$%@# ?! (translated as "What the
Bleep?!").
