We sadly report the death of Dorothy Hackett Ward, Guerry Professor
Emerita of Theatre and Speech.

A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. on Satuday, December 1, at
Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be at Forest Hills
Cemetary. Her family will receive visitors at Wann Funeral Home on
Friday, November 30, 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

Mrs. Ward's association with the University of Chattanooga began as a
student; she graduated from UC in 1929 with an A.B. degree. She
returned to the university in 1938 as an instructor in the Department
of Theatre and
Speech. She completed the M.F.A. at Yale University in 1946.

Mrs. Ward received the Evans Award for the Outstanding Teacher of the
Year in 1962 and in 1966 received the Guerry Professorship Award. For
many years after her retirement in 1975, she worked with the Festival
Players, a
community non-profit theatre company in the greater Chattanooga area.

She was a member of the Theatre and Opera Advisory Panels of the
Tennessee Arts Commission and served as executive secretary of the
Tennessee Theatre Association. She was also a member of the American
Association of University Professors, the American Educational
Theatre, and the American Federation of Film Societies.

The UTC Theatre and Speech Department's mainstage productions in the
Fine Arts Center are performed in the theatre honoring Mrs. Ward. The
plaque reads: "This theater is named in honor of Dorothy Hackett Ward
who in a life of service to her alma mater was a member of the
faculty, 1938 to 1975, Guerry Professor of Theater and Speech, and
chairman of the department." Closing the inscription is, from
Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," "O, she doth teach the torches to
burn bright."

Memorial contributions may be made to the University of Chattanooga
Foundation and designated for the Dorothy Hackett Ward Memorial by
calling the UTC Development Office.
