UTC Community,
Thank all of you for your kind words of support and sympathy over the
course of the past few days.
There will be a public Memorial Service held in the UTC Patten Chapel
on Wednesday, May 23rd at 4:00 to celebrate Steve's memory in the
presence of his family, friends, colleagues, and students.
Many have asked whether it would be appropriate to send flowers or
other tokens of condolence in Steve's memory. As it happens, a
beautiful bouquet of flowers has mysteriously appeared on Steve's
office door here in the department, right next to his prized photo of
a slightly crazed Jack Nicholson in "The Shining"; an exquisite
contrast, and singularly appropriate in light of a beautiful life
lived in full (and with no small amount of mischievousness).
In the place of flowers or other remembrances, however, the family
has asked that anyone wishing to honor Steve's memory do so through a
contribution made in support of a scholarship fund which will be
established in his memory. Steve was often most the proud when he was
sharing the accomplishments of his students with others, and I can
personally think of no more fitting legacy than this. Donations can
be made to "The Steve Lewinter Scholarship Fund" and sent to the
attention of Nathaniel Pinkard at the UTC Development Office, 605 Oak
Street, Chattanooga, TN, 37403.
Notes and/or cards of support and sympathy should be addressed to the
family of Steve Lewinter, c/o the UTC Department of Art, 615 McCallie
Avenue, Chattanooga, TN, 37403. We will make sure that they get to
the family on your behalf.
I do not have any details about whether or when there will be another
service, or whether it would be private or public. I have been
informed by the family that Steve's obituary is scheduled to appear
in the Chattanooga Times-Free Press on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday of
the coming week and I would encourage you to look there for
additional details.
Once again, I would like to thank you for all your phone calls and
correspondence letting us know that we've been in your thoughts.
Steve truly touched many lives.
Warmest Regards,
Matt Greenwell
UC Foundation Associate Professor and Head
UTC Department of Art
