In the last few weeks, we have had several students come in saying that
they had more than three years of study in a foreign language in high
school, and that they were advised at Freshmen Orientation to go ahead and
register in a second year class. Despite the years of instruction,
however, they find themselves floundering in the second year class into
which they were advised. The advise they received is inaccurate. Please
look in the UTC Catalog in the introductory paragraphs to the Foreign
Languges and Literatures Department, you will see what the established
policy really is:

"All incoming students who have three years or more of high school study in
a single foreign language (and no college level study of the language) and
who wish to continue study in that language will be required to take a
placement test to determine their level of competence in that language. A
student should begin study of the language in question at the level
established by the placement level. Under special circumsstances,
exceptions may be granted upon appeal to the department."

Please do not do a disservice to these students by placing them without
benefit of the placement exam. Instead, please tell them to contact the
DFL&L office (Ext. 4114) to schedule their placement. We can do the
testing any day at 9:00, 11:00 a.m., 1:00 or 3:00 p.m., but the student
must schedule a specific time by talking with our Administrative Assistant,
Cindy Williams.

Thank you so much for helping us serve our students better.
