What happens to the person who cannot afford the ounce of prevention and ends up needing the pound of cure in the form of an emergency room visit? I suspect the medical industry recoups what it cannot collect from uninsured patients by passing along the charges to all of us with "affordable" healthcare coverage (like the $300/mo I paid through my years as a graduate assistant and adjunct teacher making $10,000/yr or less; is that "affordable"?). So it may be that the tax we avoid by choosing to make healthcare available only to those who can pay (aka as having access to employment which provides it) comes out of our pockets any way, in pounds instead of ounces.

Any stop-gap program at UTC would require those who already pay for health coverage to be doubly charged. However, I hope the moral responsibility to help insure the health of fellow students would outweigh the desire to hold on to the dollars students could save letting others fend for themselves.

Subject: Re: [UTCSTAFF] Student Health

I find it interesting to see the conversation regarding the UTC PolyClinic and the student health fee. As coordinator of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program here at UTC and as the NP in the clinic two days each week, I can personally attest to the value of the clinic. '

It is getting to be flu season. Already this week, we have taken care of a student who was severly dehof our pockets any way, in pounds instead of ounces.
