COUNCIL OF DEANS
June 22, 1999

PRESENT: W. Aiken, D. Arfken, M. Bell, B. Berry, T. Bibler, H. Burhenn, L.
Fletcher, J. Harbaugh, G. Janeksela, P. Kazemersky, M. Willis

Approval of Minutes
The minutes of June 1 and June 8, 1999, were approved.

Dr. Berry announced that Dr. Tim Summerlin has accepted a position as
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Schreiner College in
Kerrville, Texas. Dr. Herb Burhenn has agreed to serve as Interim Dean for
the College of Arts and Sciences.

Classroom Space
Ms. Brenda Davis met with the Council of Deans to discuss the shortage of
classroom space. Due to the HVAC upgrade in Hunter Hall, construction
around the campus, and the potential loss of space in Siskin, there is a
critical shortage of space. Ms. Davis asked the deans to let her know of
any space that might be available for classroom use.

National Council on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) Grants
Ms. Diane Miller informed the council of a grant opportunity that would
allow summer research support for undergraduates. The grant would provide
exceptional undergraduates with opportunities to do original work in close
collaboration with faculty mentors. Funding would include $50,000 for the
first year and a possible continuation of funding for the second year of
$25,000. Provost Berry asked the deans to meet with their department heads
to see if there was any interest in this grant.

Dr. Berry asked Ms. Miller to report on the amount of external funding for
the 1998-99 year. She announced that they had reached their goal of $7
million and exceeded it by $43,000. This is a 20% increase over last year.
Dr. Berry congratulated and thanked her and the staff of the Grants and
Program Review office for their hard work.

Provost's Announcements
Dr. Berry announced that a 9% increase in tuition was approved at the Board
of Trustees meeting on June 17. The performance evaluation policy was also
approved.

School/College/Division Reports
Dean Deborah Arfken distributed information on graduate international
student enrollment by program. She thanked Nancy Amberson and Nancy Palmer
for their good work.

Dr. William Aiken announced that there has not been a drastic change in
enrollment since the last report, although transfers have risen significantly.

Dr. Herb Burhenn asked about the memo on telephone charges.

Adjournment
A motion to adjourn was moved and seconded.

Respectfully submitted,
Barbara Verhine
