And while we're talking about schedules ...

Would it be possible to set aside a two hour block of time on a weekly
basis that would become reserved for meetings at the
department/college/university level. This would help alleviate the
problem of finding a quorum to conduct faculty business.

Subject: [UTCSTAFF] Fall Schedule proposal

I propose the following fall schedule for UTC.

1. Start Fall classes as we did this year on Monday , Aug. 18.

2. Start Fall Break at the end of the week and run it for the entire
next week. (this year Oct. 19- 25)

3. Begin Thanksgiving Break after classes on Tuesday night (this year
November 25.)

4. Run classes for a full week that now includes only one day of
classes and Reading Day. (this year Dec. 1- 5) Tuesday would be an
optional
make-up day.

 5. Eliminate Reading Day and run Finals for the following full week,
starting on Monday. (this year Dec. 8-12)

This schedule would give the same number of days for each day of the
week. This is important for labs and other classes that may meet only
once
a week. Tuesday of the last week of classes would be an extra day that
could be used for any make-ups or skipped. It would make it feasible
to
really do something over Fall Break instead making it small parts of 2
weeks. It would meet the calls for Wednesday of Thanksgiving Week
being a
holiday and eliminate a following "dangling" Monday that makes up for
the
Labor Day holiday. It would provide a more rational schedule for
Finals.
The 4 extra days (2 at Fall Break, 1 before Thanksgiving, Labor Day)
are
"paid for" by eliminating Reading Day and running Finals through the end
of
the week where they now end on Tuesday. This would still allow
Graduation
to be comfortably before Christmas but not necessarily on a weekend.

(It would also allow me to drive home to Buffalo over Fall Break
where I
put up storm windows for my parents, instead of flying. Thus I could
see
lots of pretty leaves on the way.)
