Colleagues,

While the story in today's paper about placement into Mathematics courses is basically accurate, it is incomplete. The agreement is as follows.

If a student

    a) scores 19 or above on the math sub score on the ACT exam,

    b) takes and passes a Mathematics course in their senior year of high school,

and

   c) registers for his/her Mathematics course in the fall or spring semester of their freshman year at UTC,

then they may take Math 123 or Math 210 without taking the UTC placement exam. If they wish to take Math 131 or 144 or a higher numbered course, then they must take our placement exam to determine placement.

The student and his/her high school principal must sign the agreement and have it on file with our department prior to enrollment into the course.

I hope this clarifies things.
