NSF Research Opportunity Awards

The National Science Foundation offers a wonderful opportunity for
scientists to pursue research through Research Opportunity Awards (ROA),
awards that give faculty the opportunity to pursue research as visiting
scientists with NSF-supported investigators at other institutions. These
awards are intended to increase the visitor's research capability and
effectiveness, to improve research and teaching, and to enhance the
NSF-funded research. ROAs are generally awarded as supplements to ongoing
NSF research grants, or they could be covered by rebudgeting funds already
awarded. Requests for ROAs are submitted to NSF by the host institution,
so faculty interested in becoming ROA visiting researchers should identify
a research project they are interested in (by searching NSF's award
abstract database) and contact the PI accordingly to make arrangements for
research activities. Most ROA activities occur in the summer, but partial
support of sabbaticals is sometimes provided. ROAs generally provide 2 to
12 months of support.

Proposals must be submitted at least 3 months prior to the intended
research activities, so if you're interested in pursing research in late
summer or fall you should begin making contacts with PIs.

If you'd like to learn more about the program, or search the NSF database
in your discipline area to identify PIs you're interested in working with,
please go to:

Please contact the Office of Grants and Program Review if you are
interested in pursuing a Research Opportunity Award.
