Undergraduate Opportunities in Astrobiology at the University of Rhode
Island

The University of Rhode Island (URI) Astrobiology Team invites undergraduate
students to apply for summer undergraduate research fellowships. The
fellowship recipients will spend an eleven-week summer doing laboratory and
field research with URI Astrobiology Team investigators. Potential research
topics include studies in microbiology, biogeochemistry, geology and
geophysics. During the course of their fellowships, all participants are
expected to regularly attend interdisciplinary seminars. At the end of the
summer, each fellowship recipient is expected to present a written report on
her or his summer research and an oral presentation of her or his report to
the co-investigators and other fellowship participants. These summer
projects frequently lead to joint presentations of summer student and
sponsor at meetings and to joint publications.

The URI fellowships are designed primarily for science students who will
have just completed their junior year. Fellowship recipients will gain
valuable research experience at a renowned oceanographic institution in a
very picturesque setting. They will also receive reimbursement of travel
costs to and from Rhode Island, a stipend to cover living expenses, and
accommodations in a residential setting within walking distance of the URI
Narragansett Bay Campus. Program dates are June 2 to August 15, 2003 (with
some degree of flexibility).

This fellowship program is supported by the NASA Astrobiology Institute
(NAI). It is run in conjunction with the NSF-sponsored Summer Undergraduate
Research Fellowship in Oceanography (SURFO) program at the URI Graduate
School of Oceanography (GSO). For more information about astrobiology at
URI, visit http://www.gso.uri.edu/astrobiology. To learn about the SURFO
Program, visit http://espo.gso.uri.edu/~surfo/. To apply for an
NAI-sponsored astrobiology fellowship or an NSF-sponsored SURFO fellowship,
visit http://espo.gso.uri.edu/~surfo/apply.html. The application deadline
for both fellowship categories is March 15, 2003. The astrobiology
fellowships are internationally competed. Women and minorities are
encouraged to apply.
